Why did we decide to enter into the highly competitive book business? We are both big readers of books, however, the true inspiration came from our daughter. Having read to her since she was a baby, she learnt to read at a young age and has never looked back. In fact she probably had the ability to read well before she actually read aloud for the first time.
We bought our daughter a Blues Clues "read yourself" book. This was a book that replaced some words with pictures, presumably so that children can read the picture parts of the story. So we handed her the book and asked if she could read it to us, not expecting much as she wasn't even 2 years old at this stage. She pointed her little finger at the start of the sentence (as we had always done) and she read every word. What surprised us was how fluently she read the story. She probably had the ability to read at an earlier age, but it had never occurred to us to ask her to read aloud before.
We believe every child has the ability to read much earlier than we expect. We found that reading to our daughter every day, pointing to each word as we read it and reading the story with inflection and wonderment worked for us. We have always played lots of board games, so it made sense to sell something that we were passionate about and that complimented existing products. And we all love a good movie to watch, so again, it made sense to expand our product line to include DVDs.
Well that is our personal story why we wanted to be in the book business. What about us now as a business?
The name FatRain came about after soaking in some hot pools...it was raining at the time. Not ordinary rain, but great big dollops of fat rain splashed about us. We thought that it was the perfect day to read a book by the fire, or watch a DVD or to play a board game or all three! Hence the name FatRain was born.
As a business we believe that giving exceptional customer service is even more important for online businesses as you can't put a face to the name. The best thing that we can do is to treat you as we would like to be treated. To us that means, treating any personal information you provide us with as confidential, respond to all your queries promptly, prompt delivery of goods and to provide clear communication about the status of your orders. It is important to us to make sustainability a part of our everyday business practice. Where possible we will reuse packaging materials such as bubble wrap, cartons and paper. Most people don't require invoices, therefore we only supply tax invoices on request to reduce paper consumption. Even then, our preference is to supply an electron PDF copy. Most people want an invoice in case something goes wrong. We stand behind our products and it's safe to say with our products, that if it is in good condition when it arrives, then there won't be any long term problems. Courier delivery itself is a sustainable method of shopping. A courier delivery van will make hundreds of deliveries in a single trip. This reduces trip generation by individual consumers, which in turn reduces congestion and minimises the load on our roads.
